Local government reorganisation update

News

The Government has confirmed plans to replace Surrey's current county and borough/district council system with two new unitary authorities. There will be one for East Surrey (covering Elmbridge, Epsom and Ewell, Mole Valley, Reigate and Banstead, and Tandridge) and one for West Surrey (covering Guildford, Runnymede, Spelthorne, Surrey Heath, Waverley, and Woking).

Elections for the new councils will take place in May 2026, with the new authorities taking full control from April 1, 2027. Current councillors will remain in place until then. Surrey County Council will lead the reorganisation, working closely with districts and boroughs through new joint committees.
